The end of last week was not good. It got really cold after a brief taste of warmer weather and my body revolted. I was miserable. I was a stuffy, sneezy, rudolph nosed shrew with a one box a day kleenex habit. Not pretty. I did absolutely nothing other than make endless cups of tea, wrap myself in a blanket and sit on the couch. Dishes piled up in the sink. Clothes went unwashed. I wore sweatpants to pick the kids up from school. I forgot to brush my hair. And I felt sorry for myself.

“Stupid winter,” I thought. “Why does it have to be so cold. Why does it have to be so long. Why, why, why, why, why???”

But every now and then I would catch a glimpse of the guys working on the roof of the building next door to us. This building is huge; a church attached to another structure, and it’s really tall. These guys have been out there for weeks, in the freezing cold and the wind. Climbing up and down ladders. Working.

And it made me realize that things could be worse. So, I had a cold; at least I was warm! At least I had the luxury to be miserable on the couch. At least I had a fuzzy blanket and a cup of tea.

Which leads me to one of my new years resolutions: to appreciate right now. Sometimes that’s tough. After finally deciding to follow my passion for photography as a business, I find myself getting impatient. I want to be fourteen steps ahead of where we are right now. But as my ever supportive husband reminds me, we’ll get there.

In the meantime, I’ll have another cup of tea and slow my mind down, and try to appreciate where I am right now.

I took this photo of one of those hard working guys the other day as the sun started going down. I think it will be a good reminder.
