I remember the moment it happened. The moment I knew John and I would be together for the rest of our lives. We’d been dating for about a month and were hanging out in my tiny dorm room at UCONN. John was teaching me how to speak Italian. He would write down phrases in one of my many college ruled notebooks and then write the translation below. After four or five sweet tidbits he paused and then wrote another. I studied it carefully, wanting desperately to impress John with how quickly I was picking this Italian business up. I scanned the page looking for some word that I recognized. Finally I asked, “What does it mean?” He wrote, “I would like to marry you someday.” And after picking myself up from the little puddle that I had melted into, I knew. He was my future. It wasn’t weird, it wasn’t scary. It was just…right.

John and I celebrated our fifteenth wedding anniversary last week. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed. It seems like those college days were just yesterday. We may not be love struck kids anymore, but we’re still best friends, partners and each others biggest fan. And it’s still just right.

Happy anniversary, John. Ti voglio tanto bene!
